| Beijing cracks down hard on fake brands |

(China Daily)A senior market regulator said yesterday that Beijing law enforcement bodies have banned brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Prada, Givenchy, Fendi and some 20 others from being sold at marketplaces around the city.
The move will target vendors regardless of whether the goods being sold by the vendors are genuine or counterfeit, Li Dongsheng, vice-director of the State Administration for Industry and Commerce, said vendors who sell those luxury brandnames could face criminal charges for intellectual property violations.
The move comes at the request of the foreign brand holders, according to the Chinese authorities who issued the ban, with the promise from the brand holders that they will not provide genuine goods to places other than authorized chain stores, Li said at a news conference organized by the State Information Office.
Responding to frequent complaints from foreign companies of trademark violation, the Beijing authorities temporarily closed down the Xiushui Market, which is a stone's throw from the US Embassy and attracts both local and foreign buyers who want to own brandname goods at unreasonably low prices.
By the end of August, Li said, the local administrations for industry and commerce posted 982 announcements
at billboards announcing the new policy in the city's 168 markets which sell clothes, shoes and accessories.
In the Hongqiao Market which is located south of downtown Beijing, Li said, regulators ordered 40 businesses to close down because they sold goods with those brand names.
A hotline on 12315 has opened to the public to report trademark violations, said Li.
